ASR Hip Replacement Recall
An ASR hip replacement is a surgical procedure that is an alternative to a total hip replacement procedure. Rather than have patients undergo a total hip replacement, Johnson & Johnson manufactured the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System. These ASR hip replacement products are artificial joints that are surgically implanted into patients to replace worn or weakened parts of the hip. The ASR Hip Resurfacing System replaces the ball portion of the hip and has a metal stem that fits into the femur. The ASR XL Acetabular System is a concave metal piece that provides a smooth lining for the acetabulum. While most hip replacements use plastic, the ASR hip replacements are metal-on-metal devices. According to recent medical studies, patients who undergo an ASR hip replacement face an increased rate of hip failure because the ASR hip replacement parts do not fit properly, which can cause patients to have to undergo a revision surgery. These complications stem from the defective design of the ASR hip replacement implants. DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Recall
On August 26, 2010, Johnson & Johnson recalled both the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, confirming that both ASR hip replacement products have excessively high failure rates. The ASR hip replacement implants at issue are manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Following the recall, DePuy advised consumers who have been implanted with a Depuy ASR hip replacement product to contact their surgeons and undergo annual monitoring.

Defective Depuy ASR Hip Replacement Implants
The two DePuy ASR hip replacement devices at issue are the ASR XL Acetabular System, which is a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement surgeries and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which is a partial hip replacement intended to preserve the bone. Evidence suggests that one in eight patients implanted with a DePuy ASR hip replacement device will need a second surgery within five years. Women are more likely to need a revision surgery than men. Side Effects Caused by Defective DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Implants
In addition to an increased likelihood of having to undergo revision surgery, other side effects caused by the defective DePuy ASR hip replacement products include hip pain, infection, bone fracture, dislocation, metal sensitivity, tissue damage as a result of metal debris, and difficulty walking.
